The Congress high command on Monday is believed to have offered a berth to Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi in the Manmohan Singh cabinet at the Centre if his party comes to the rescue of Kiran Kumar Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh.

Antony, who flew down to Hyderabad in a special aircraft on Monday afternoon and had a meeting with Chiranjeevi, put forth the Central cabinet berth proposal before him. This is besides four cabinet berths to the PRP in the state and a couple of MLC seats in the next council elections.

Sources said Antony conveyed a message from party president Sonia Gandhi, inviting Chiranjeevi into the Congress party, instead of just joining the government. The PRP president, while assuring to extend support to the Kiran government to provide the stability, did not make any commitment on merging the PRP with the Congress party, sources said.

Andhra Pradesh waits on edge as a report that could decide the state's future is discussed in Delhi between the Home Minister and the leaders of five different political parties from the state.

Three main parties - Chandrababu Naidu's TDP, the BJP, and K Chandrasekhar Rao's TRS - are boycotting the meeting. They say there's nothing to discuss - a separate state for Telangana has to be created.

"I deeply regret the stand taken by them. It does scant justice to the valuable work done," said Home Minister P Chidambaram at the meeting. "Nevertheless, I propose to send a copy of the report to the parties that have chosen to stay away," he said.

He then added, "I would urge you to read the report and the recommendations with an open mind and be prepared to persuade, and to be persuaded by, people who hold another point of view." The Home Minister suggested that the group meet again later this month after regional leaders have read the report.

The document that will be made public after the Home Minister's session has been prepared by the Srikrishna Committee which was set up in February 2010 with the tough agenda of unraveling what "all sections of society" feel about the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. There are three regions - Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra. Those from Telangana want Hyderabad as the capital of a new state. The other two regions object strongly, not least because of Hyderabad's commercial success as an IT mecca.

The issue is so complex that even the ruling Congress finds itself struggling to keep its politicians from Andhra Pradesh together. Leaders from Telangana met the Congress' central leaders last night and said they will not surrender their demand for a new state. In recent weeks, Congress MPs and MLAs from the Telangana region have threatened to resign if the union government does not stand by them.

However, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy said last night, "I also do not know what is in the report. Experts have gone into the issue (Telangana) in detail. Let us wait for them to submit the report. Let us see what is in it before making comments."

Back at home, shops in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana have been fortified against stone-pelting and other attacks.

Srikrishna report on Telangana: Some suggestions

The Srikrishna Committee does not state whether it's in favour of a new state for Telangana. Instead, it lists between four to six options for the union government to consider. Among them:

At 21:53 UTC on January 12, 2010 an earthquake with a magnitude 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The US Geological Survey (USGS) says that it was the most violent earthquake to strike the impoverished country in a century, and death tolls are reported to be rising into the hundreds of thousands. "Porte-au-Prince is probably one of the worst constructed cities in the world, and even the presidential palace collapsed," said Roger Bilham, from the University of Colorado-Boulder. "This is an earthquake many of us were expecting to occur sooner or later."

Dennis Mileti, also from CU-Boulder said three factors contributed to the severity of the Haitian event: the shallow location of the earthquake (only 8.3 kilometers or 5.2 miles underground) resulting in high shaking intensity; the low-quality construction of structures in the area; and the lack of earthquake preparedness and increased vulnerability resulting from Haiti being a poor country.
The epicenter of the earthquake was just 15 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Besides its strong magnitude, the earthquake’s shallow depth ensured that the densely populated capital would suffer violent shaking. More than 30 aftershocks rocked the area.
Reports say a majority if the infrastructure has collapsed, including schools, hospitals, government buildings – such as the presidential palace and the main prison — aid centers, and shantytowns.
The top map shows the region surrounding the 7.0-magnitude earthquake and the aftershocks. Earthquake magnitudes are measures of earthquake size calculated from ground motion recorded on seismographs.
Ocean areas appear in shades of blue, and land areas appear in shades of brown. Both in water and on land, higher elevation appears in lighter colors. Black circles mark earthquake locations determined by the USGS, and circle sizes correspond with quake magnitudes. Black lines indicate fault lines.

The USGS said the earthquakes occurred along the boundary between the Caribbean and North America plates. This area is characterized as a strike-slip fault where the Caribbean plate moves eastward with respect to the North America plate.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy dies in helicopter accident

YSR is no more. He has been killed in a helicopter crash in Nallamalla forest. The news of YSR’s death has plunged not only Andhra state but the whole nation into mourning, as stunned YSR and Congress supporters throughtout the country express their grief on this accident. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was born on 8th July 1949 in Pulivendula, Andhra Pradesh. He was popularly known as YSR. He was one of the popular faces of Andhra Politics. He was elected to the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Lok Sabha from the Kadapa constituency for four terms and to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for five terms from the Pulivendula constituency. In 2003, he undertook a three month long paadayaatra, or walking tour, across several districts in Andhra Pradesh. As a result of this paadayaatra, Congress Party came up with huge majority in state Assembly elections and he became the chief minister. He led his party to victory in the next general and assembly elections held in 2009, also.
On September 2, 2009 a helicopter carrying YSR went missing in the Nallamala forest area. On the morning of 3 September, 2009, TV channels and newspaper websites reported that the helicopter had been found crashed on top of Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles from Kurnool. And it was later confirmed by the Prime Minister’s office and all five persons found dead in the accident. YSR was man of masses, a true leader. He moved AP to couple of steps forward on the path of prosperity, development. His untimely death is an irreparable loss for the nation. I pray to the God to grant peace to his soul and give strength and courage to his family, friends and well-wishers.

21-day recap: From Maytas to Raju's fall from grace...

Satyam Computer Services got exposed in 21 days. On December 16, Satyam broke the news of Maytas buyout. The acquisition eventually did not go through as it was severy opposed by the shareholders. A series of resigations from the Satyam board took place subesequently. The final blow came on January 7, when Satyam's promoter Ramalinga Raju wrote a letter to the board saying that Satyam's balance sheet was forged. The balance sheet showed inflated cash & bank balance of Rs 5040 crore. The accrued interest of Rs 376 crore in the books too was non-existent.

In the Q2 of FY09, reported revenues was to the Rs 2700 crore Vs actual revenue of Rs 2112 crore. The Q2FY09 operating margin reported was Rs 649 crore against Rs 61 crore. The Q2FY09 numbers had Rs 588 crore of artificial cash in books.

In this period, Satyam has lost market cap from Rs 15183 crore to Rs 2662 crore, a fall of 82%. It has certainly raised questions on corporate governance standards of Indian companies. If one looks at the whole scenario, then it is clearly visible that Satyam never had cash of USD 1 billion. By buying Maytas, Raju wanted to transfer company’s dummy entry of cash reserves from Satyam’s book to Maytas balance sheet. However, strong opposition evident from its ADR fall forced Raju to take a U-turrn and then the stock started falling like a pack of cards. Raju revealed that balance sheet figures were manipulated for the last six quarters. It is indeed a sad day for the Indian markets. Satyam’s historic journey ends on a tragic note.

Terror strikes Mumbai, over 147 killed and injured 500 people

The top floor of the world-famous Hotel Taj Intercontinental in Mumbai caught fire after a bomb explosion as terroists struck at seven locations in the metropolis late Wednesday night.The 22-storey, five-star hotel by the Arabian Sea was one of the targets of the terrorist attack. An explosion on the top floor soon engulfed the top floor of the hotel in fire.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot, officials said.

Earlier in the night, terrorists opened fire at police and paramilitary forces outside the Taj Hotel between 10.15 p.m. and 10.30 p.m., police officials said.

The officials, who refused to speak on record, said the terrorists fired indiscrimantely near the five-star hotel where around 2,000 guests and staff were stranded.

The body of a foreign woman guest was recovered from the Taj Hotel and two terrorists were holed up inside the building, a police official said.

At least 90 percent portion of the building was plunged into darkness as authorities cut off power in a precautionary measure.

3rd blast in 3 hrs at Nariman House, snipers take position

There's been a third explosion inside the Nariman House in Colaba, breaking the eerie silence for the third time in the last three hours.

The building is still in darkness as the Army closes in. Snipers have taken position at Nariman House.

Earlier, seven terrorists were killed in commando operation at the Taj hotel. There are reports of fresh firing from inside the hotel. Army sources have told NDTV that operation at Taj can go on till morning.

However, the Director General NSG JK Dutt said that one injured terrorist was still inside the hotel.

The NSG chief said that it's a matter of time before the combing operation is over.

NSG commandoes have now launched their final assault at the Trident hotel where fire has been reported on the top floor.

Seven hostages have been rescued from Nariman House which is reportedly surrounded by NSG commandoes.

Earlier on Thursday, fresh blasts rocked Oberoi-Trident and Taj hotel. Security forces had launched a major counter-offensive against the militants holed up in various installations across the city.

Combined forces of National Security Guards (NSGs), Navy, Army, Mumbai Police and Anti-Terrorist Squad have been rushed to tackle an unknown number of militants hiding in various locations across the city.

Police said no more hostages were in Nariman House. However, the police added that two-three terrorists were suspected to be inside Nariman House.

All the security personnel, armed with sophisticated weapons and communication equipments were put in strategic locations in all the three sites and are coordinating with each other.

About 40 of them are also believed to be taken as hostages by the militants and are being shifted from one floor to the other frequently.

Militants have opened fire on the eighth floor of the Trident hotel in Mumbai, which is still under their siege. One terrorist has been caught alive from the Trident hotel by the commandos, reports say.

Around 10-12 terrorists are still holed up in the Trident hotel and have taken many hostage. Some of them are Israeli and Canadian nationals. Seven people have been rescued from the Trident, two have been brought out on stretchers.

More than 100 people have been killed so far, including nine foreigners and at least 327 injured in a series of well-coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Terrorists, who apparently came in by boats, struck at 10 places in south Mumbai including five-star hotels, hospitals and train stations.

Speaking to NDTV, Maharashtra Director General of Police A N Roy said, "There is no indication so far of the identity of the terrorists."

He said that the terrorists were highly armed, level of weapons and training suggest that they are not locals.

According to sources, terrorists have demanded the release of prisoners, ransom. However, Ministry of Home Affairs has denied this saying that the terrorists did not make any demand.

Four Navy ships and choppers have launched search over Gujarat-Goa seas. Navy and Coast Guard are conducting joint search for the ship that may have carried the militants.

Credit cards with photos of militants have been seized by the Naval Commandos.

Naval commandos have seized grenades, AK 47 magazines, shells and knives from militants.

Earlier, NSG and Military Commandos entered the Taj and Trident hotels. Five terrorists have been killed. Several staff members at the hotels have also been killed, including two at Trident.

NSG Commandos launched operations in the Nariman House building in Colaba too. This was the second place that was attacked in Mumbai. Two men came on a scooter and hurled a grenade at nearby petrol pump.

Though the grenade missed the petrol reservoir, it destroyed a facade of the station. The terrorists then ran into Nariman House building behind petrol pump into a Jewish residential building. Here, the terrorists murdered two people and then went silent for several hours till early this morning. This is another place apart from the Taj and the Trident, which are under siege.

Policemen were able to successfully flush out terrorists from the Cama hospital and everything seems to be calm now. Curfew has been imposed at Colaba and Gateway of India. At least 800 Army personnel have been deployed at various locations in Mumbai.

At least 14 policemen have been killed across the city, including the head of the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad Hemant Karkare, who was shot three times.

Well-known encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar is also dead. Additional Commissioner of Police Sadanand Date is critical. Every top line anti-terror force in the country has been pushed into Mumbai including commandos of the National Security Guard, Marine Commandos and Army commandos.

There are also reports of low intensity blast in Ville Parle and grenade attack in Santa Cruz. Two blasts have been reported in Napean Sea road area of south Mumbai.

Many foreigners have been held hostage by the terrorists. "Gunmen took 15 hostages and half of them foreigners," said an eyewitness at Taj hotel.

"Gunmen wanted anyone with British or American passport," said another eyewitness.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said that around 20-25 terrorists entered Mumbai their nationalities are yet to be ascertained. Five terrorists have been killed so far, many escaped and one has been arrested.

An unknown organisation called the Deccan Mujahideen has taken the responsibility for the terror attacks.

Maharashtra government has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured in the attacks.

Speaking to NDTV, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said, "There is no plan for talks with the terrorists. Claiming to have some "vital leads", the minister expressed confidence of a breakthrough soon.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has addressed the nation and he also called an emergency Cabinet meeting. Home Minister Shivraj Patil is back in Delhi from Mumbai.

Cabinet Committee on Security met before the full Cabinet meet. The Prime Minister's election rally in Delhi scheduled for Thursday was also cancelled.

Intelligence sources say that foreign hand is fully evident in these attacks. They have arrested a Pakistan national from Chowpatty area in the city.

Police have seized a rubber boat, which anchored off Mumbai harbour. It all started with incidents of firing in Colaba and near CST station.

Meanwhile, train services have resumed at the CST station. Lufthansa, Northwest and Air France have cancelled their flights.

On their part, hotels in Mumbai have been asked not to take new guests.

Moddu Sreenu killed in ananthapur jail

Julakanti Srinivas Reddy alias Moddu Srinu, whose name figured in several murder cases, on Wednesday was acquitted of the charge in the murder case of pan shop owner Ramakrishna in the city, on Wednesday.

This is the second murder case in city in which Srinu was cleared of the charge. Last year, he was acquitted in the kidnap and murder case of a car driver registered by the Chikkadpally police. In the latest case, three more accused - Patolla Goverdhan Reddy of Revolutionary Patriotic Tigers and M. Anjaih - who were charged with conspiring to kill Ramakrishna and Tirupati Balanna, were also acquitted. The court struck off the conspiracy charge since the prosecution failed to present substantiating evidence. Twenty-eight 28 witnesses were produced in the case. Two eyewitnesses presented by the police told the court that the same accused, who attacked Ramakrishna with knives earlier, had gunned him down on August 16, 2004, while he was in his pan shop. As the persons arrested in the attack case were different, the court could not take their statement into consideration, the defence advocate Nayan Kumar told The Hindu. Srinu and Balanan were acquitted on benefit of doubt.

Hailing from Challagonda village in Guntur district, Sreenu was accused of involvement in many murder cases including that of Telugu Desam MLA Paritala Ravindra.

A First African-American President Barack Obama

With Election Day over, it's a fine time for exhausted voters to kick back and pop in a movie about elections and the U.S. presidency.

And when you do, what will you find? African-American presidents. Female vice presidents. Heated campaigns, scrappy politics, negative advertising. Barack Obama's victory was one for the history books, but movies got there first. For several decades now, filmmakers have pictured such a twist on the executive branch, filling the screen with charismatic U.S. leaders of assorted shapes and colors.

This list isn't comprehensive, but it suggests a few clear themes. The first reflects a common fear that any African-American who makes it to the White House is in danger of being assassinated. The second is a tendency, pronounced among mega-budget disaster films, to feature a black president in times of global calamity. And a third is the fact that African-Americans and women more frequently assume power in the realm of science fiction, where authors often imagine what humankind has yet to achieve.

"Rufus Jones for President" (1933)

The premise: Small African-American boy runs for president, sparking satire, fabulous music and discomfiting watermelon stereotypes. The politician: Rufus Jones, a toe-tapping tyke in a double-breasted suit, played by 7-year-old Sammy Davis Jr.

"The Man" (1972)

The premise: A freak building collapse kills the president and Speaker of the House. The vice president, who's old and frail, declines the presidency. The politician: Douglass Dilman (James Earl Jones), the Senate president pro tempore who gets bumped into the hot seat.

"The Contender" (2000)

The premise: When his vice president dies, the Democratic president (Jeff Bridges) taps a woman to fill the spot -- unleashing a firestorm of innuendo and accusations. The politician: Sen. Laine Billings Hanson (Joan Allen), Ohio Democrat and purported past orgy participant.

"Head of State" (2003)

The premise: A freak double-plane accident kills the Democratic candidates for president and vice president. With their hopes now aimed four years ahead, party bigwigs select a city alderman to run for prez; smear campaign ensues. The politicians: For president, plain-speaking African-American Mays Gilliam (Chris Rock). For vice president: his bail-bondsman brother, Mitch (Bernie Mac).

"Idiocracy" (2006)

The premise: Five hundred years in the future, two 21st-century guys of average intelligence awake from a cryogenic freeze into a country run by utter boobs. The politician: African-American President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (Terry Crews), a former wrestler and porn star.

"The Simpsons Movie" (2007)

The premise: Homer dumps pig crap in a lake, polluting all of Springfield and causing the Environmental Protection Agency to seal it in a biodome. The politician: President Arnold Schwarzenegger and Vice President Hillary Clinton.

Tendulkar breaks through Australia

The events on the first day of the fourth Test almost followed the trend of this series. An Indian captain called the right side of the
coin and promptly said, ‘We will bat’. Virender Sehwag once again began his ride on top gear but departed after giving India a flying start. Rahul Dravid continued with his poor form and VVS Laxman didn’t fail to contribute another beautiful innings.

The only deviation, a pleasant one, was provided by Sachin Tendulkar. After failing to reach triple figure in the series, despite essaying many innings that promised more but never materialised into something big, the master obliged by scoring 109 as India finished at 311 for 5.

The breathtaking shots Tendulkar played during his 40th Test hundred were equally matched by the many breathless moments the champion gave to his fans as he lived a charming life. On way to his second Test hundred of the year - the earlier one came against the same opponents in Adelaide - Tendulkar got life on three occasions.

It was Jason Krejza who failed to hit the stump with Tendulkar stranded in the middle of pitch following a moment of indecision in going for a run. As Laxman backed off too far, Tendulkar had no option but to go for the run. Luckily Krejza was off the mark and the master blaster survived.

The off-spinner felt the most of burnt for missing the chance as the next two lives that Tendulkar got came off his bowling.

Tendulkar, playing on 85, gave charge to Krejza but miscued the ball to mid-on, where Mitchell Johnson dropped the catch. A few overs later, Sachin played the same shot to the same bowler, in the same area and the result was also the same.

He was dropped, this time on 96, with Brett Lee being the culprit. Aided by the sloppy Australian fielding, Sachin reached his hundred with a four off Krejza.

But in-between the hiccups the master blaster played with authority and in the company of Laxman (64) took India to safety after the loss of three quick wickets just before the lunch.

Tendulkar’s first three scoring shots were all boundaries. But after the departure of Sehwag, he adopted a watchful approach and consolidated the innings with Laxman.

The three quick dismissals prior to lunch marred an otherwise fruitful morning session for the hosts. After cruising through the most part of the morning session India suddenly lost wickets in a cluster.

Sehwag and debutant M Vijay were hardly troubled by the Aussie pace as they scored at almost five runs per over. India cruised to 59 in 12 overs without losing any wicket.

With a leather hunt looming large, Shane Watson struck for the Aussies, removing Vijay. In the next over Krejza scalped his first Test wicket as he got Rahul Dravid for a duck. But the biggest blow came three overs later. Krejza snapped up Sehwag, who dragged the bowl on to his stumps attempting a cut to a ball which cramped him.

Tirupati Laddu Prasadam

The entire Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams share of Anna Prasadams (Pulihora), Chitrannam, Sweet Pongal and Curd rice are distributed free to all pilgrims coming out after darshan.

Laddu Padi (Timings: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

Panyarams (Laddus) are sold on all days to pilgrims in the counter outside the temple. Tokens for Laddus can be obtained from bank counters erected in the 'Q' line for Laddus.

One Laddu Token is issued per person in the Vaikuntham Queue Complex, on payment, for SarvaDarshan pilgrims. They have to collect their laddu after darshan from the counter outside the main temple.

TTD decides to cover Tirumala Ananda Nilayam with gold

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), in its board meeting today resolved to cover the present Ananda Nilayam inside the Tirumala temple with gold , TTD Trust Board Chairman D K Audikesavulu Naidu said here.

Talking to the mediapersons after the board meeting held at Anamayya bhavan , Mr. Naidu, who recently took over the mantle of the TTD trust board, said the estimation required gold for covering the entire Ananda Nilyam will be known only after designers submit a report and later will be identified as the donors for the work.

It also decided to provide free cellar darshan to the parents of the bride and bridegroom who get married at the tirumala hills.

He said to treat major ailments and diagnose, Rs 2 crore would be sanctioned to Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) for acquiring sophisticated equipments like monitors, ventilators, dialysis machines .

The battle for the United States presidency entered its final hours on Monday, with polls showing Democrat Senator Barack Obama holding a solid lead in his historic quest to become the first black U.S. President. His rival, John McCain of the Republican Party, was grasping for a last-minute upset.

On the last day of his 21-month campaign for the White House, Mr. Obama told supporters in Jacksonville, Florida, that the outcome of the longest, most expensive U.S. presidential contest in history was up to them.

“That’s how we’re gonna change this country — with your help,” he told the crowd, amid chants of “O-bam-a, O-bam-a.”

“And that’s why we can’t afford to slow down, sit back, or let up, one minute, or one second in the next twenty-four hours. Not one minute. Not one hour. Not one second. Not now. Not when so much is at stake.”

Mr. McCain meanwhile was racing through seven States in a last campaign swing that ends on Tuesday morning, in a bid to persuade undecided voters that he, not his rival, was more qualified to lead the U.S.

“With this kind of enthusiasm, this kind of intensity, we will win Florida and we will win the election,” Mr. McCain told a relatively modest crowd in Florida.

Looking, again, to distance himself from the unpopular incumbent, President George W. Bush, Mr. McCain stressed that he, too, opposed Mr. Bush’s economic policies. But he insisted that Mr. Obama could be counted on to raise taxes, something he would not do.

Some polls showed tightening races in Florida, Ohio and a number of battleground States. But some national polls suggested Mr. Obama’s lead was widening overall as the candidates moved to the final stages of the race.

A USA Today/Gallup poll published on Monday found likely voters favouring Mr. Obama by 11 points over Mr. McCain, 53-42 per cent. The poll was conducted Friday through Sunday among 3,050 adults, and had a margin of error of 2 per cent. Other polls showed Mr. Obama with a 7 or 8 percentage point lead.

Pregnant women 'can drink a small glass of wine a week'

Moms-to-be, you can safely drink a small glass of wine every week for a new study has suggested that taking alcohol during pregnancy does no harm to children and may actually improve their behaviour and vocabulary.
Earlier studies suggested that drinking alcohol during pregnancy could harm unborn kids. Now a team at the University College London has claimed that it's safe for to-be-mothers to drink small quantities of wine every week.

According to the study's lead author Dr Yvonne Kelly, "Our research has found that light drinking by pregnant mothers does not increase the risk of behavioural difficulties or cognitive deficits.

"Indeed, for some behavioural and cognitive outcomes, kids born to light drinkers were less likely to have problems compared to children of abstinent mothers, although children born to heavy drinkers were more likely to have problems as compared to children of mothers who drank nothing."

Researchers have based their findings on an analysis of data from 12,500 three-year-old kids, which looked at their mother's drinking patterns during pregnancy and assessment of the behavioural and mental capacity for thinking and learning.

They found that children born to women who said they drank "a glass of wine" very occasionally or up to two drinks once a week throughout pregnancy were less likely to have conduct problems, hyperactivity and emotional problems than children of abstainers, 'The Daily Telegraph' reported.

In fact, the study found that boys born to mothers who drank lightly were 40 per cent less likely to have conduct problems and 30 per cent less likely to be hyperactive.

Those lads also had higher vocabulary scores and can identify shapes or colours or letters and numbers more easily than those born to abstainers.

On the contrary, the study found that girls born to light drinkers were 30 per cent less likely to have emotional symptoms and peer problems as compared to those who were born to abstainers.

The findings are published in the latest edition of the 'International Journal of Epidemiology'.

Milk allergy? Drink more milk

Increasingly higher doses of milk may ease and possibly help children allergic to milk overcome the condition, a new study has found.

The findings are based on a study of 19 patients, conducted by Johns Hopkins Children's Centre and Duke University.

Illuminating and encouraging, investigators say, because this is the first-ever double-blinded and placebo-controlled study of milk immunotherapy.

Researchers compared a group of children receiving milk powder with a group of children receiving a placebo. Neither the patients nor the investigators knew which child received which powder, a rigorous research setup that minimizes the chance for error and bias.

"Our findings suggest that oral immunotherapy gradually retrains the immune system to completely disregard or to better tolerate the allergens in milk that previously caused allergic reactions," said Robert Wood, the study's senior investigator and director of Allergy & Immunology at Hopkins Children's.

"Albeit preliminary and requiring further study, these results suggest that oral immunotherapy may be the closest thing yet to a 'true' treatment for food allergy," he said.

Currently, food allergy management involves complete avoidance of the trigger foods, waiting for the child to outgrow the allergy or treating allergic reactions if and when they occur, according to a Johns Hopkin's press release.

The latter could be dangerous, investigators said, because these common foods are difficult to avoid and some reactions can be severe and even life-threatening.

In a report released in late October, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that food allergies affect three million children in the US, an 18 percent jump from 10 years ago.

These findings were reported online in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology.

Kids are safe, secure and protected from injuries when grandparents are around, a boon for working parents, according to a new study.

Compared to organised daycare or care by the mother or other relatives, having a grandmother watch a child was associated with a decreased risk of injury for the child.

According to researchers, the odds of injury were significantly greater among children whose parents never married, compared with children whose mothers stayed married.

Similarly, odds of injury were greater for children living in homes in which the father did not co-reside. These associations were independent of family income, according to a Bloomberg press release. The results were published in the November issue of Paediatrics.

"Recent growth in the number of grandparents providing childcare has some observers concerned they don't adhere to modern safety practices," said co-author David Bishai, professor at Bloomberg School's Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health.

"This research tells us not only is there no evidence to support this assumption, but families that choose grandparents to care for their children experience fewer child injuries."

Bishai and colleagues analysed data from the National Evaluation of the Healthy Steps for Young Children Programme, which includes information on over 5,500 newborns enrolled in 15 US cities in 1996-97 with follow-up for 30-33 months.

Data on child care arrangements reported by the mother were linked to claims reporting children's office visits, allowing researchers to identify medically attended injuries.

"As injuries are the number one cause of death for children in US, it's critical we continue to determine risk and protective factors," said study co-author Andrea C Gielen, director of the Centre for Injury Research and Policy at the Department of Health Policy and Management at Bloomberg.

Will cut lending, ICICI Bank tells RBI

ICICI Bank, the country’s largest private bank and the second largest after government-owned State Bank of India, has told the Reserve Bank of India that it will significantly temper down its credit or growth in advances. This may result in a shrinking of its balance sheet if the economic environment in India remains sluggish over the next two or three years.
Government sources said ICICI Bank, which has total assets of Rs 3,85,000 crore or $81.5 billion as on September 2008, wrote to the central bank last month that it will not grow its assets in the retail segment as aggressively as it did in the last three years. In a falling interest rate regime, ICICI Bank expanded vigorously in the retail segment with 35-40% growth in advances. “We borrowed wholesale funds and expanded rapidly. This was the right strategy in a falling interest rate scenario,” Chanda Kochhar, Joint Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, ICICI Bank, told The Indian Express.

But Kochhar said the bank has now tightened its term loans, credit card loans and two-wheeler loans in its bid to moderate its retail advances. “We also reduced dependence on wholesale deposits in a rising interest rate scenario and our growth is centred more around CASA (current account, savings account) deposits now,” she said.

The bank’s net profits during April-Sept 2008 dropped 2% year-on-year and its group net profits declined 22.7%. Global credit rating agency Moody’s today lowered its baseline credit assessment. It said the bank’s asset quality has been on an adverse trend, with bad loans up to 4.2% of gross loans in September compared with 2.8% a year ago. The absolute volume of such loans increased year-on-year to 60.2%, it noted.

More than 2 cups of coffee 'can lead to underweight babies'

Moms-to-be, beware! Ensure that you don't down more than two small cups of coffee a day, for a study has claimed that taking too much caffeine in pregnancy could lead to underweight babies.
Researchers in Britain have carried out the study and found that women with a caffeine intake of more than 200 mg a day are more likely to give birth to smaller babies who are prone to die early or suffer developmental problems.

They have based their findings on a survey of 2,500 pregnant women who were given questionnaires asking them about their daily caffeine intake, leading newspaper the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The answers were then compared with the birth weight of the baby, taking into account the weight as well as ethnic background of the mother.

The study, by Leeds and Leicester universities, found that moms-to-be who drank more than two small cups of coffee are likely to give birth to underweight babies -- the findings are to be published in the 'British Medical Journal'.

The new research came just months after a US team carried out a nationwide study and found that drinking more than 200 mg of coffee a day during pregnancy doubled a woman's risk of miscarriage.

However, Pat O'Brien of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said women should abstain from caffeine in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. "This is a very vulnerable time for the baby, and it's when most miscarriages occur."

Telugu is a Classical language ("దేశ భాషలందు తెలుగు లెస్స")

Finally, Telugu has got the crown it deserves-the status of a classical language. Telugu is one of the four Indian languages to be accorded the rare status. The other three are Sanskrit, Tamil and Kannada.

Of them, Kannada too got the recognition along with Telugu on Friday. The Centre conferred the status on these two South Indian languages on the eve of the formation day of both these states. After the Centre declared Tamil as a classical language a few years ago, a movement had been launched in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to get classical status for both these languages. Politicians cutting across party lines brought pressure on the Centre, but it sat on the demand for three years and finally took everyone by surprise by announcing it on Friday. Moreover, Telugu is the largest spoken language in the country after Hindi and Urdu. The demand for classical language status to Telugu first came from Gnanpeeth award winner and eminent poet, Mr C. Narayana Reddy. Even before other writers offered support, the demand was taken up by the Telugu Desam president and former chief minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, and his MPs raised it in Parliament.

The Central government’s policy is to recognise as ‘classical’ those languages which are at least 1,000 years old. Earlier, the British government had declared Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic as classical languages and the UPA government had added Tamil to the list. "Telugu has all the qualifications for a classical language and it is good that the government declared it so," said Mr Narayana Reddy. Historians say Telugu literature has been in vogue for over 1,500 years. Some even argue it is more than 2,000 years old. The first Telugu words have been noticed in the Ikshavakula inscriptions. The Nagarjuna Hill inscriptions of 250 AD also contain Telugu words. The oldest Telugu inscription is from 633 AD, and its literature begins with an 11th-century translation of Mahabharata.

Even during the period of Satavahana rule for 500-600 years in the early part of the first millennia when Prakrut was the royal language in Andhra, Telugu did not die. During 1000-1100 AD, Telugu re-established its suzerainty through inscriptions and poetry. In ancient Andhra, tribes such as Dravida, Yaksha, and Naga spoke Telugu or Tenugu while Andhras from North India used to speak another language called Desi. The Russian linguist, Mr M.S. Andronov, has pointed out that Proto-Dravidian gave rise to 21 Dravidian languages and Telugu split from Proto-Dravidian between 1500 and 1,000 BC.

Telugu arose as an independent tradition, with almost no influence from Sanskrit or other languages, and its ancient literature is indescribably vast and rich. It deserves what it has finally got.

Lyricist's threat

Telugu scholars are sore over the Committee's decision, coming it did after according classical language status to Tamil. Veturi Sunda Ramaramuthy, noted lyricist, said he would surrender his national award for best lyricist as a protest.

They have formed a joint action committee to fight for the cause, recalling how Telugu was described as the best of languages by Krishnadevaraya, and as "Sundara Telugu" even by the illustrious Tamil poet Subrahmanya Bharatiyar and as Italian of the East by medieval European travellers.

The material collected by the commission included several Satavahana inscriptions dating back to 2nd century BC, the mentioning in "Indica' of Megasthenes, also before Christ, Itareya Brahmanam, a part of Rigveda which spoke of Telugu, and the famous Kalimella edict in Kadapa district. The proposals will also highlight the rich heritage of Telugu literature from Nannaya to Allasani.

"You won't find it printed out and put in hotel rooms like the Bible," he says. "But there is magic or miracles in the history like how Jesus walked on water." And just like children go to Sunday school and learn lessons here, Hindu children learn many valuable lessons around the story of Diwali, he says.

Diwali Date

This year Diwali on 28th October, but holidays started from 26th October. Diwali comes on the day of ‘Amavasyaa’. India is on a moon calendar, so the timing of the festival of Diwali varies, but it is either at the end of October or beginning of November.

Diwali literally means a row of lights, and the main attraction is the candles and lamps, called diyas, that are lit in almost every home after puja (a ceremony where the lamps are made). The lights are meant to welcome Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity, and to bring joy, mirth and happiness in the new year, which starts the day after Diwali.

Similar to Christmas, it is also considered a time to get new clothes and exchange gifts and sweets with friends and neighbors. This festival is celebrated over a period of five days, with dancing, the many lights and fireworks. "Some homes have 50 to 100 lights," says Amin.

The story behind the celebration is long and fascinating, but at the core of it is a story of good vs. evil. In north India, Diwali celebrates Rama's homecoming, his return home after defeating Ravana and his coronation as king; in Gujarat, the festival honors the goddess of wealth; and in Bengal, it is associated with the goddess Kali. Throughout India, it symbolizes the renewal of life, so people wear new clothes on the day of the festival, and it also signifies the onset of winter and the beginning of the new year.

There are many details of the legend that are too lengthy to concentrate on in a short article, but there are many lessons to be learned from the legend, says Amin. "You could spend a whole day talking about why Rama was exiled in the first place," he says.

Basically, Rama's father, the King, made a promise to one of his wives that he would do anything she asked because she had gone to a war with him, become his confidant and stuck her finger in the wheel of the chariot to keep it moving when a bolt fell off. He was so impressed, he promised her anything.

When it was time, she did ask something of the king – she asked that Rama (the king's oldest son) be exiled so that her son could be next in line to be king. Since he promised her anything, he exiled his oldest son even though he didn't want to.

"There are many, many lessons to teach children in the story of Rama," says Amin. "I tell my kids the stories before they go to bed. Eventually you run out of Cinderella stories, and I wanted them to know the good lessons here. One important thing is that if you make a promise, you keep it. And that good can overcome evil."

Amin and his family celebrate Diwali every year. "We light candles at our house and make sweets to celebrate Diwali even though we are not in India," says Amin. He says that there are Indian communities in California and New Jersey that celebrate Diwali, and that Indian restaurants are busiest during that time of year, especially because of the emphasis on sweets during the festival.

The most popular sweets to make are jalebi, a small ring of dough that is fried and covered in sugary syrup, and kaju katri, cashews that are lined with a very thin coating of silver.

Bomb Blasts in Gujarat, Maharashtra, 3 killed, 13 injured.

"There has been an explosion in Modasa town but we are yet to confirm how it took place. The bomb and dog squads have been rushed to the site," District Superintendent of Police R B Bhrambhatt said.

The injured were being transferred to the nearby hospitals, police said.

In Malegaon, one person was dead and three were injured in a blast. Reports coming in from Malegaon in Maharashtra said that the blast occurred in the vicinity of a mosque.

While police officials said that it was a cylinder blast, residents claimed it to be a bomb blast. Details are awaited. Earlier in the day, seventeen crude bombs were found near the Kalupur Darvaza of Ahmedabad. The bombs found were not sophisticated devices but crude explosives.

Barely two days ago, a low intensity bomb rocked Mehrauli in Delhi, killing two persons and leaving several injured. The same comes two weeks after the coordinated bombings in the capital on September 13 that killed 24 people and injured over a 100.

On July 26, serial bombings in Ahmedabad killed 56 people. In the days following the bombings, 23 low-intensity bombs were recovered from Surat and defused.

TRS Party peoples attack Lanco office in Hyderabad...

Hyderabad, Sep 25 (IANS) Activists of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) Thursday attacked the office of Lanco Group of companies here after one of their colleagues was allegedly hit by the car belonging to the group’s chairman and Congress MP L. Rajagopal.Dozens of TRS activists pelted stones, damaging the door and window panes of the Lanco office in upmarket Jubliee Hills here, the police said. A few cars parked in front of the office building were also damaged in the attack in the evening.

A case was registered against TRS workers at Banjara Hills police station. Hyderabad police commissioner B. Prasad Rao ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The TRS activists were protesting against an incident that took place earlier in the day in Nizamabad district.

One TRS activist was injured when Rajagopal’s car allegedly hit him as a group of the party workers tried to block the convoy of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

They were demanding a clear government stand on the issue of separate statehood to Telangana region.

One TRS worker was hit when the Vijayawada MP’s car tried to make its way. The TRS reacted strongly by staging protests at different places in Telangana, demanding the Congress MP’s arrest. It was during a similar protest in the state capital that Lanco office was targeted.

Rajagopal, who is against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, had made some controversial statements in the past, evoking strong protests from the TRS and pro-Telangana leaders within the ruling party.

Pranab Mukherjee was in Nizamabad to attend a function. He is the chairman of a three-member committee formed by ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to look into the issue of separate Telangana. TRS has been demanding that the committee submit its report and the Congress party take a favourable stand on the issue.

STORY: Passengers of the Padmavati Express had narrow escape as two coaches of the train were gutted in Prakasham district in India's southern Andhra Pradesh during the early morning hours of Wednesday (September 24).

The train was heading towards popular pilgrim town Tirupati.

Though there are no reports of any causality, officials said that a few passengers suffered from breathlessness due to the smoke. One woman is reported to have suffered minor injuries.

According to reports, the stationmaster noticed smoke in one of the coaches which spread to another compartment. He then alerted the driver. The coaches were immediately detached.

"Around 3:10-3:15 am smoke broke out in a coach, the 3rd compartment from the rear caught fire. We are not sure but may be the fire was caused due to some problem in the AC. The passengers pulled the chain and stopped the train, there were no causalities," said Vevdenchantra, Superintendent of Police, Prakasham, Andhra Pradesh.

Railway authorities said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but added that due to the alertness of the passengers, all got out of the coaches safely.

"We don't know why this happened, but people were made to get out of the train with their luggage in time and some even got down leaving their luggage behind," said K. Devanand, district collector.

Investigations are being carried out into the incident. This is the second train fire in two months in Andhra Pradesh.

On August 2, 32 passengers were charred to death in sleep when the Secunderabad-Kakinada Gouthami Express train caught fire.

The world's largest particle collider successfully completed its first major
test by firing a beam of protons all the way around a 17-mile (27-kilometer)
tunnel Wednesday in what scientists hope is the next great step to understanding
the makeup of the universe.

India has made major scientific and technological contribution to the new atom smasher also called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which went live on Wednesday at the experimental facility near Geneva in Switzerland. LHC is expected to answer several facts of fundamental nature of the universe that remains a mystery, said the scientists of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

Indian laboratories, led by Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) at Indore, have contributed substantially towards construction of the accelerator (LHC) itself, with many components being fabricated by Indian industry and supplied to CERN.

These had to satisfy not only exacting standards of precision but also follow a stringent time-line as dictated by the CERN schedule.
Towards the scientific side, two Indian teams are participating in different experiments.
Each of these collaborations is huge with 1000-2000 scientists from 125-150 top class institutions from 20-30 countries participating.
Each full detector costs around $400-500 million to build and the R&D and fabrication takes around a decade.

Prof. Raghav Verma of Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai representing Indian scientists has carried an Indian flag, IIT sources said.

LHC has been constructed at the European Laboratory of Particle Physics (CERN) located a few kilometers outside Geneva.
Conceptualised around a quarter century back, approved for construction in the mid-1990s and now almost a decade in the making, this technological marvel accelerates counter rotating beams of protons in two steel pipes 27 km in circumference.
With it going live, the LHC became the highest energy particle accelerator in the world with 7 times as much energy punch compared to the existing accelerator at Fermilab, US.
Asked the role of Indian scientists, Atul Gurtu of TIFR said they have been active in this field and had collaborations with their counterparts at CERN and Fermilab.
However, it is for the first time that a concerted, coordinated and comprehensive contribution made by India towards such a huge international scientific program, he said.

One Indian team participates in the CMS experiment with TIFR as the nodal institution and includes scientists from BARC, Delhi, Punjab and Vishwa Bharati universities.
The other team is in the ALICE experiment with VECC/SINP (Kolkata) as the nodal institutions and IOP, IITB, Jammu, Rajasthan, Aligarh and Punjab universities.
Gurtu said the scientific goals are truly stupendous, ranging from understanding the microcosm of the sub-nuclear world to attempting to answer the question what was the universe like at the very beginning of time, a few moments after the Big Bang.

GENEVA (Reuters) - For the first time, physicists have created a new form of matter by recreating the conditions thought to have existed 10 microseconds after the Big Bang at the start of the universe, scientists announced on Thursday.
The European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), based outside Geneva, said scientists from more than 20 countries conducted a series of experiments which smashed together heavy lead ions in a fireball to prove a theory that had only existed on paper for years.
By generating collisions at temperatures 100,000 times as hot as the sun's center and at energy densities never before reached in laboratory experiments, they succeeded in isolating tiny components called quarks from more complex particles such as protons and neutrons, CERN said in a report.
This provided "compelling evidence'' for the existence of a new state of nuclear matter, a quark-gluon plasma, which CERN described as "the primordial soup in which quarks and gluons existed before they clumped together as the universe cooled down.''

According to CERN, the breakthrough in the project affectionately known as the "Little Bang,'' is an important step in understanding the early state of the universe, created some 12 to 15 billion years ago in a massive explosion, or Big Bang.
"A series of experiments using CERN's lead beam have presented compelling evidence for the existence of a new state of matter 20 times denser than nuclear matter, in which quarks, instead of being bound up into more complex particles such as protons and neutrons, are liberated to roam freely,'' it said.
"Such a state must have existed just a few microseconds after the Big Bang, before the formation of particles of matter as we know them today,'' it added.
Discovery opens up new territory
Some 350 scientists from institutes in 20 countries took part in seven large experiments linked to CERN's accelerator and its lead beam program which began in 1994.
The institutes, in the Czech Republic, France, India, Italy, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland, measured aspects of the invisible collisions, such as their electromagnetic radiation.
"The combined data coming from the seven experiments on CERN's heavy-ion program have given a clear picture of a new state of matter,'' said Luciano Maiani, director-general of the 20-member state CERN.
"This result verifies an important prediction of the present theory of fundamental forces between quarks. It is also an important step forward in the understanding of the early evolution of the universe,'' the Italian physics professor added.
The discovery achieved at Europe's particle physics research center, a sprawling complex straddling the Swiss-French border, provides strong incentive for future planned experiments to "definitively confirm'' the quark-gluon explanation, CERN said.
The focus of research on quark-gluon matter now shifts to the United States. A national laboratory at Brookhaven on Long Island in New York plans to begin its own experiments this year.
"There is still an entirely new territory to be explored concerning the physical properties of quark-gluon matter,'' Maiani said. "The challenge now passes to the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and later to CERN's Large Hadron Collider.''
CERN plans to begin an experimental program, including a heavy-ion experiment, at its Large Hadron Collider in 2005.

Heavy rains in Hyderabad, traffic Jammed

Heavy rains that lashed the state capital threw traffic out of gear while inundating several lowlying areas on Monday.

Rain water entered in houses in several low lying areas in Kothapet, Talabkatta, Chaitanyapuri, Parsigutta and other localities.

Vehicular traffic on main roads came to a standstill at Nampally, Khairtabad, Lakdi-ka-Pool, L B Nagar, Chanderghat, Dilsukhnagar Ameerpet, Punjagutta and Abids.

The Greater Hyderabad Muncipal Corporation emergency cell received 50 distress calls from various localities while fire brigade office received a call from Malakpet where rain water entered into ground floor of a complex.

The city received a rainfall of 4mm, local Met office said.

Under the influence of the southwest monsoon active in the state, moderate to rather heavy rains are likely to occur at most places over Coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema during the next 48 hours.

Two Killed Trainer Aircraft Crashes At Sanathnagar

A single-engine aircraft - Cessna-152 (VTEMR)- crashlanded in the thickly populated Subashnagar area in Sanatnagar here at around 11.09 am resulting in the death of assistant flight instructor Captain Neeraj Jain (24) and trainee pilot P Srinivas of the AP Aviation Academy on Monday morning.

Srinivas was charred to death in the aircraft, while Jain died on the way to hospital. Jain was from Gurgaon in Delhi, while Srinivas was a resident of Sainikpuri in the city.

Begumpet airport director R K Singla told ‘TOI’ that according to Air Traffic Control (ATC) records the two-seater aircraft took off at 11.07 am from the Begumpet airport and lost contact with the ATC at 11.09 am. "We are yet to ascertain the reason for the accident," he said.

A team of officials from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) would go into the cause of the accident, police said.

Eyewitnesses said the aircraft hurtled down and hit an electric pole before hitting the ground. The tail of the aircraft, however, got stuck in a nearby building.

According to officials, the aircraft might have developed a technical snag and hit a high-tension powerline in the process of attempting an emergency landing at an idgah in Subhashnagar. However, the aircraft missed the open land, hit an electric pole and a building and crashed in an alley, right behind a Ganesh pandal. The panic-stricken residents ran for safety soon after the crash. A wing of the aircraft fell on the rooftop of a building. One of the local youths sustained minor injuries while trying to douse the aircraft fire by pouring buckets of water. P Vinod Kumar, who was among the first to reach the accident spot, said: "I was sleeping in the pandal and heard a loud blast-like sound. I rushed out and saw the crashed aircraft. While one person (Srinivas) was completely burnt, another (Neeraj Jain), with folded hands, pleaded for help."

"I tried to cut fuel supply of the aircraft as there were chances of an explosion. At the same time, I tried to rescue the man. However, within few seconds, he came out of the wreckage, but he was badly burnt," he added.

In fact, a major mishap was averted as there was no power supply in the area at the time of the accident. "There was no power in the locality from 9.30 am. Usually, there is no power interruption, but today CPDCL resorted to load shedding," A Surekha, a housewife, said. She was reading a newspaper on the staircase when the aircraft hit her building and collapsed. As a result, she suffered minor injuries on her head.

There were no civilian casualties on the ground as the aircraft fell between two residential blocks. Incidentally, hundreds of students were attending school just 40 feet away from the accident spot.

The AP Aviation Academy uses three Cessna-152s and a Cessna-172 for training. The academy has been using the Cessna-152 for the past 20 years. "There is a thorough check on every aircraft before handing it over to the trainee pilots," a senior official of the academy said. The official said based on the ‘emergency located transmission’ (ELT), the reason for the accident could be known. "The ELT will help during the investigation," he replied to a query.

The post-mortem on the bodies of the trainee pilot and instructor was conducted at the Gandhi Hospital.

Hyderabad police ringtone into 'anti-terror' calls

The next time you call up a police officer on his cell phone in this hi-tech city, you'll be greeted with an "anti-terror" caller tune.

Well, that's part of a range of initiatives being taken by the Hyderabad Police in an attempt to raise awareness among the members of the public on terror attacks, a year after three deadly bomb blasts rocked the city.

"We want to reach out to people through an informal campaign to create awareness among every citizen to take care of ten square feet of area around them," Detective Department DCP R S Praveen Kumar said.

"The idea is that every citizen should be conscious of his surrounding areas and report to the police on anything suspicious. We are asking people not to be silent," he added.

What's more is that a caller can also download the "anti-terror" ringtones available in both Telugu and English by just pressing the star button on the mobile phone.

The ring tones are intended to convey to people the importance of contacting the police when they come across some unattended objects and during any emergency situation.

"We are sensitising the people on terror acts. Public participation is also required in such initiatives," Hyderabad City Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao said.

Messages such as "Be watchful", "Each One-Watch One", "Anything doubtful, report to us" and "Dial-100" are on display already on scores of hoardings dotting the skyline of this hi-tech city.

After introducing the caller tunes, the Hyderabad Police are working on launching another initiative of sending terror alert messages on mobile phones.

1 killed, 35 injured at Chiranjeevi's party launch

One woman was killed and 35 people were injured as utter chaos and stampede-like situation prevailed at the maiden public meeting of Telugu Chiranjeevi in Tirupati on Tuesday evening.
The trouble began as a large number of fans jumped over barricades and surged towards the main stage, virtually walking over people. In the melee, the woman was killed.

Women and physically challenged people were the worst affected, as the unruly crowd pushed themselves and moved closer towards the podium.

The disabled fans of Chiranjeevi, who were offered a special gallery near the podium, had a tough time coping with the situation. Several of them were escorted out by volunteers and policemen before the meeting and averted a tragedy.

A large number of people swarmed over a huge cut-out of the Telugu star put up near the podium ignoring appeals by Chiranjeevi's brother Nagendra Babu and other speakers not to climb over to the temporary structure on the dais.

As the unruly mob rushed towards the podium, several mediapersons had to run for safety.
Ambulances rushed several injured people to the hospitals, and doctors attending them said most patients are likely to be discharged after basic treatment.

Police had to resort to lathicharge to control the crowd, who threw footwear at them.
Water was at a premium as people including the injured could not have any proper supply. Several youth climbed over a water tank to collect whatever water was left in it.

Chiranjeevi, himself had a tough time moving out of the podium after completing his speech, as a large number of fans jostled with each other trying to have a glimpse.

A short circuit in a power supply van added to the trouble, but no casualty was reported as the generator was immediately switched off.

Tirupati: As on the silverscreen, Telugu matinee idol Chiranjeevi gave a blockbuster performance at the temple town of Tirupati on Tuesday, where he announced the launch of his political party

which translates to 'people's party'.

The venue of the 'mega party' launch turned into a political mecca as hundreds of thousands of Chiranjeevi's fans and supporters from all over Andhra Pradesh thronged the temple town days in advance to hear the filmstar-turned-politician revealing the name and agenda of his party.

Excited over their matinee idol's political debut, fans of Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi went out of control at the site of the public meeting in the temple town leading police to lathicharge on them.

Repeated appeals by Chiranjeevi's brother and actor Nagendra Babu to maintain calm during the public meeting went unheeded among the jubilant fans. Police resorted to lathicharge to control the crowd.

Broadly outlining the policies of his eagerly awaited party, he said that eliminating poverty, ensuring social equality, rooting out corruption, development of villages on par with urban areas, and providing health and education to all would top the agenda.

During the two-hour mega show, the 53-year-old actor said he favoured prohibition but added that his party would take a final decision only after detailed deliberations.

He termed as 'social' the problem of Maoist violence and promised to respect the sentiments for a separate statehood for the Telangana region.

"After spending 30 years in the glamorous field, I could have lived a life for myself. I have all the comforts in life but I decided to be in your midst by responding to your appeal," said Chiranjeevi, who announced his decision to join politics on August 17.

"I am overwhelmed by your support all these years. Now it is time for me to pay back and be in your midst to share your sufferings," said Churu, as he is fondly called, amid thunderous applause.

Chiru, who declared that he had no rivals in politics, took a swipe at the ruling Congress for selling government land to industries and for acquiring cultivable land for Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

"We have no rivals. Problems are our rivals. We have no rivals because we have no fear and greed. We have entered the battlefield but our battle is against problems. Courage and honesty are our two weapons. We have no leader. All are soldiers. I am also one among you," he said.

20 peoples killed in Gouthami Express fire in AP....

At least 20 passengers were charred to death and six injured when the speeding Secunderabad-Kakinada Gouthami Express train caught fire in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh early on Friday morning.

The fire broke out in one of the sleeper coaches at 0115 hours near Kesamudram railway station, about 200 kms from Hyderabad, and soon spread to four other bogies leading to heavy casualties, Chief PRO of South Central Railways P Krishnaiah said.

The tragedy struck when the passengers were fast asleep making it impossible for many of them to escape from the blaze.

With the train moving at a speed of 100 kms per hour, the fire, which broke out in S-9 coach spread rapidly billowing out large plumes of smoke.

Such was the impact of the raging fire that the bodies of some of the passengers were charred beyond recognition, making it difficult for authorities to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some passengers died due to suffocation.

While railway officials were tight-lipped about the death toll, Warangal district Superintendent of Police V C Sajjanar said at least 20 passengers have perished in the fire.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who visited the accident site, put the death toll between 15-20.

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi on Sunday announced his formal entry into politics.

Speaking at his newly-inaugurated party office at the Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad, the actor said he would announce the name of his party on Aug 26 in the temple town of Tirupati.

As the 53-year-old reigning star of Telugu cinema gears up for his new role in politics, the question uppermost in the minds of observers is whether he can recreate the magic of NTR who had stormed to power within nine months of floating TDP in 1983, a feat that has no parallel in India's political history.

Dark and handsome, Chiru, as he is referred to in film circles, is a mass hero in the mould of late N T Rama Rao and his image is one of a kind-hearted do-gooder and a loving family man.

His admirers are hopeful that their hero will revive the magic of NTR, the demi-God of the film world, and capture power in next year's elections while some others argue that his entry will herald a coalition era in state politics and he could at best play the role of a kingmaker.

Chiranjeevi, a Padma Bhushan awardee who has acted in 148 films in his three-decade long career, is among the highest paid actors in the country and has a massive following, particularly among the youth.

His success in Tollywood, traditionally dominated by a handful of powerful families, was particularly sweet as he had no family connection in the industry and his rise was attributed to his grit, determination and hard work.
